Peer Mentoring
When a parent reaches out to us, they decide what support they would like to have. This includes having a Peer Mentor.
Peer Mentoring at The Why Not? Trust is part of The Village. Our aim is to match parent volunteers with soon-to-be or new parents with experience of care, supporting them as they navigate parenthood and everything in between.

Who can become a Peer Mentor?
Anyone with parenting or caring responsibilities can become a Peer Mentor. You don’t need to have mentoring qualifications or expert knowledge—just your own life experience and a willingness to support another parent.
As a volunteer, you will be motivated by your desire to:
• Share your experiences
• Help someone navigate the challenges of parenthood
• Connect with a friendly community
What kinds of things will I help with?
As a Peer Mentor, you will provide a listening ear. Some of the things you could help a parent overcome typically include:
• Lack of social support
• Dealing with expectations and criticisms
• Lack of confidence and self-esteem
• Baby-related guidance (e.g., sleeping, feeding)
How does it work?
Interested volunteers can express their interest via this FORM or get in touch with our Peer Mentor Lead at Ashleigh.donaldson@whynottrust.org. From here, a follow-up conversation will be arranged to provide more information, ensure it’s the right opportunity for you, and give us the chance to get to know you better.
You’ll then be invited to attend a training session, held online and typically lasting around one hour. Following training, you will be required to complete a PVG application, the cost of which we will cover.
Upon receipt of your Disclosure certificate, we will match you to a fellow parent based on location, interests, and personality. An induction will then be scheduled by the Peer Mentor Lead.
The Why Not? Trust are looking for care experienced parents to join our supportive community! Whether you join us as a Mentor or Mentee, you’ll be supported every step of the way.
Peer Mentoring at the Why Not? Trust involves care experienced parents or parents to be being mentored by other parents with care experience or knowledge of care. The aim is for parents to support each other and build a trusting relationship. Mentors will engage with, encourage, and empower Mentees, drawing from their own life experiences.
