Job Applications: Top Tips
Job application forms can take a bit of time and work to complete, especially if you have already completed a few. They can look quite similar but often the answers to the questions asked need to be worded specifically for each one, even if they seem the same.
Here are some top tips for filling out job application forms that will hopefully speed up the process or at least make them all seem a bit less intimidating!
Before you start an application, it’s good to have everything at the ready so you aren’t searching for pieces of information after you’ve started it. This can often lead to feelings of being overwhelmed or stressed so make sure you have everything there.
Here’s a good checklist for what to have ready:
- The closing date for the application (is there a time as well as date?)
- A copy of the job description
- A copy of your CV, or
- A list of previous employment, with details of responsibilities and dates
- Your education history (you don’t need to put dates attended unless it asks)
- A list if your skills and strengths
- Any similar application you have already completed
Most applications are now completed and / or submitted online. It might be an online form, or a downloadable document which you then have to email in to the employer.
When filling out an application form, here are a few things to keep an eye out for:
Plan:
- Make sure you have some quiet time to start working on your application
- Write or type out the questions and your answers and regularly save them so you can work through them without an online form ‘timing out’ or you losing all your hard work if your device loses battery.
- Work backwards from the closing date so you have enough time to finish it without rushing, and try to submit it early (some employers close job adverts when they have had lots of applicants)
- If online, can you start and save the application, or does it need done in one go?
- Check how your application is to be submitted
- Arrange in advance for someone to look over your answers and give you feedback
Some employers want you to apply through their own online portal, so you might need to create a log in and create a profile. If so, please do this as it will be looked at during the recruitment process and might help you stand out!
Check:
- Have you answered ALL questions required?
- Have you answered the questions fully and to the point?
- Have you listed all previous employment (usually most recent first)?
- Have you explained any gaps in your work or education history if the form allows?
- Have you actually submitted the form? (Sometimes you need to review, or go to a final page to submit)
- Have you received confirmation of submission, or is it in your sent / outbox?
- Keep a copy of your completed form for your records (you might need to keep the Word document you worked off as your record)
