Helpines: Domestic Abuse

(Read time: 3 minutes, 58 seconds)

There are many types of abuse, but widely speaking when we talk about abuse we mean a person you are, or were, in a relationship with, hurting or controlling you in a physical, sexual or psychological way.

Some types of abuse are difficult to recognise. You might not even realise that what you’re experiencing is abuse at first. You can experience more than one type of abuse at the same time. And both women and men can be victims of domestic abuse.

All types of abuse can be extremely distressing. If you are currently being abused or are struggling with thoughts and feelings relating to abuse you’ve experienced in the past, please do reach out to a helpline below, or speak to your connector or someone you trust.

GP

One of the best point of contacts is your GP. They can see to any physical abuse you are experiencing and point you in the direction of other people / services who can help. GPs are also trained to recognise domestic abuse and to try to get you alone at an appointment so you can talk freely and safely.
