Essentials: Email Address

Everyone needs an email address these days, and we are more likely to receive emails than post now!

There are many email providers out there, so see which one you like, or which ones your friends recommend. These could include Hotmail, Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, iCloud mail, ProtonMail and many more. Some offer more privacy options than others so if that is something that is important to you do some research. Remember you can always change your email address but you’ll need to remember where you have used the old one so you can change it over!

Things that you’ll need an email address for:
  • Applying for jobs
  • Applying for college or university
  • Online shopping
  • Social media
  • All online accounts
Email address can also be used for receiving bills and bank statements – not only saving money with costs of posting but saving paper use too. Much more environmentally friendly!

Most people keep the same email address as they go through life, however, especially as you start to apply for jobs, you want to ensure your email address is both safe and suitable. Any email address you use for applying for jobs or being contacted for professional purposes should be appropriate and not contain any words or language that might offend, cause upset, or perhaps even stop you being chosen for the job.

Ask yourself this – if I put my email address on a job application will I be taken seriously?

If you are not sure get someone else to have a look at it for you and see what they think. If in any doubt, create a new one. You can always keep the old one for communicating only with friends or for sign in purposes. To keep your identity safe online try not to have too much personal information in your email address either. Try to avoid date of birth references (even the year), address or anything apart from your name that could identity things about you. You might also be judged for your age – so leave it out and let your skills and experience speak for themselves instead!
