Essential Documents: Getting Your Passport
What is a Passport?
A passport is a photographic document issued by the government that verifies your identity.
Why do I need one?
A passport is by far the best way to prove your identity. You need to verify your identity for starting further education, getting a job or opening a bank account. You cannot travel outside of the UK without a passport. At some airports you have to show your passport for journeys between Scotland and England, Wales or Northern Ireland. It is always in your best interest to own one.
How do I get one?
Please use the below link to find out who can apply, how to apply, what documents you will need for your application, and to apply online or via paper form:
If you have a children’s passport you can use it until it expires, even if you are over 18. All child passports are only valid for 5 years though, so be sure to check the expiry date.
Now that we have left the European Union, the ‘red’ Great Britain passport is still valid until it expires. If you are applying for a passport now you will receive the ‘blue’ one – this is what the new version looks like - Introducing the new UK passport design (publishing.service.gov.uk).
