As our approach has evolved and the community has matured, some young people have become parents and their babies often attended community gatherings.
Through discussion with the parents with care experience, it became apparent that they had common experiences. It was recognised that this group within our community did not always feel able to access mainstream universal services. Through these discussions, a young person suggested that The Why Not? Trust create a parent and baby group, somewhere to gather with their children, including the adults who looked after them during their care experience (connectors) and their babies. A project plan was created, and initial funding was obtained through the Life Changes Trust Empowerment Grant scheme in 2017.
The group was created as a place where young parents could gather in safety and without judgement where young people could explore and express their identity and approaches to parenting. The intent from the outset was for the group to be run in partnership with the parents involved, building confidence in the parents and empowering them to grow and develop the project in the way that best meets their needs and aspirations.
